Gers go clear at top
All eyes were on the big match in the St Comgalls Club between Saints and Ibrox, but it is last years Champions, The Gers, who sit top of the pile after week 5 in the Larne & District Pool League. Stuart Houston's team, whom many thought would struggle after losing some big name players in the summer, ran out 9-6 winners at home to St Comgalls. Amazingly they won the first 9 frames of the match but then lost the next 6, but all that mattered were the 2 points. Also motoring along in the quiet lane are Hugo Manson's Feathers, they are joint 3rd courtesy of a 10-5 win over Thatch Rockets. And what a fantastic match it was that unfolded between Saints and Ibrox, Ibrox stormed into a 5-1 lead but back came the Saints to level at 6-6 helped to no end by 3 break and dishes, 2 for Shaun McAlister and 1 for Dean McDonagh. Saints took the 15th frame to lead 8-7 but Gary Clarke came to the rescue of the visitors with a fine finish to make it a point a piece in front of a large watching crowd. Clarke scored 3/4 on the night for Ibrox. William Irvine's No 1 Club are still well in contention after a 10-5 win at home to Highfliers. For the hosts Darren Lowe and William Irvine both scored 2/2 whilst best for the visitors were Geoff McMichael and Rod McIlhinney both on 2/3. No 1 Reds cantered to a 12-3 win at No 1 Blues with hat tricks a piece for Gareth McIlroy and Ian McCalmont. 2011/2012 Champions The Thatch keep in touch at the top with a 13-2 hammering of Larne FSC and Station Bar are in 7th after a 10-5 home win over LIPS.
