Next Thursday 16th February sees the opening rounds of our annual League Doubles Competition. It is held in various venues in the town, please check below to find out your details. Each Bar/Club will be played down to "one winner" with each pairing having a maximum of 2 matches.

- Played to "Scotch Doubles" ie players take alternate single shots
- Teams lag only once. Alternate breaks thereafter including any deciding frame.
- Breaks per team to alternate
- Players can confer at any time, no restriction
- If a match is deemed to be going to slow a one minute clock may be put on each shot
- All matches "Best of 5 Frames"

The 2012 Northern Ireland Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles Championships, take place this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday 4th & 5th February respectively. Interleague round up

Larne Pool League had mixed fortunes at the annual NIPA Interleague Event held this year in the Queens Hall, Newtownards. The 'A' Team under the captaincy of Thatch cueist Ellis Martin lost both group matches 13-17 to Ballyclare and 14-17 to Carrick. A win 12-3 win over Ballyclare in the Semi Finals seen them make the final of the Plate Event where they lost out 9-12 to Clogher Valley.

The B1s captained by Bryan McWhirter done very well in winning their group with a 17-5 victory over Ballyclare and a 17-14 win over holders North Down & Ards B2. They were drawn against North Down & Ards B2s again in the Semi Final but unfortunately got off to a bad start eventually losing 9-17

The fledgling B2 Team run by Scott Hutchinson and Alec Irvine excelled themselves. They only lost out in qualifying for the Semi Finals of the main event by a single frame on frame difference. They defeated NI Ladies 17-6 and lost only 12-17 to eventual winners Carrick B1. In the Plate Semis they won 12-3 against Ballymena B1 but lost out in the Final to North Down & Ards B1 by 8-17

2012 NIPA Interleague

Larne Pool League will be sending 3 Teams to the Northern Ireland Pool Association 2012 Interleague Competition.

The 'B' Team Event is on Saturday 14th January and we will be sending 2 teams. The 'B1's will be selected by Bryan McWhirter and the 'B2's selected by Scott Hutchinson and Alec Irvine.
The 'A' Team Event will be played on Sunday 15th January, and is managed by Thatch cueist Ellis Martin. Both Events will be held in the Queens Hall, Newtownards. More details will follow as get them.

Larne Pool League will be supplying transport to the Interleague on both the Saturday and the Sunday. We will depart from the car park behind Larne Library at 9.30am. Please do not be late as we will be leaving promptly.

The 2 winning red matches meet each other at 9.15pm with the 2 winning blue matches meeting each other at 9.45pm. Ibrox's unbeaten run which stretched back 34 matches (30 League, 4 Knockout Cup) came to an end when the Gatherups deservedly took all 3 points in this derby fixture. Elsewhere, Thatch steamrolled onwards 13-2 over the Busmen and Larne FC came from 4-0 down to win against Feathers in the Pigeon Club. Larne FSC got their first points on the board and the spoils were shared as Eagle Rockets hosted Station Bar. In the other derby match No 1 Club demolished No 1 Blues who were a shadow of the team that beat a strong St Comgalls steam last week. St Comgalls lost out again this week, 5-10 at home to Gers.

The Thatch made a big statement of intent by destroying the No1 Blues 14-1. Captain Bryan McWhirter has some big summer signings in his squad and will be going out with all guns blazing for the League title. Champions Ibrox started slowly but eventually overran Eagle Rockets, whilst many peoples tip fotr the title The Gatherups needed a play off frame to beat a resilient Feathers team. Gers thrashed the Busmen and Larne FC took the honours in their local derby match. Alex Irvine's No1 Club won away at LIPS and Ciaran O'Toole's St Comgalls defeated old rivals the Station Bar.

Richard Todd will take his reigning Champions Ibrox to Station Road to face Eagle Rockets, hoping to keep their unbeaten run going to 29 matches. Last seasons runners ups The Gatherups entertain Alaister Law's Feathers, whilst The Thatch who have strengthened considerably this time round are away at No 1 Blues. Improving St Comgalls make the short trip to the Station Bar.

The big kick off !!

The 2011/2012 season off the Larne & District Pool League will kick off on Thursday 8th September 2011. Fourteen teams will compete for all the different trophies on offer. We are down 1 team on last season, with Station Bar 'A' unable to enter this time round, but we still have a very, very strong line up.

Spotted whites are compulsory for all matches and will be available to buy from the Committee soon. As soon as the first fixture is released it will be posted on here.

Ibrox Invincibles

Ibrox Pool Team crowned off a remarkable season by winning their final League match to make it a whole season unbeaten in the League. Winning the title meant so much to the players as they felt they had let their Manager Richard Todd, his assistant Scott Hutchinson and themselves down, when they lost it in the final match of last season. Add to this victory in the Knockout Cup, the Doubles (McDowell & English), the Richard Bowen Memorial Individual (McDowell) and the Player Of The Year trophy (McDowell), they have excelled beyond their wildest dreams in what is the toughest Pool League for some years in Larne.

The Player Of The Year title went to the wire last night, in fact to the very last frame. Ed McDowell needing 2, won his 1st but slipped up in his 2nd. Gerry McCorry of The Thatch won his first 2 to go within a frame of a share of the lead. But a pinpoint McDowell finish under pressure gave him the title in only his 1st full season playing in the League. But well done to big Gerry who is the model of consistency, for pushing McDowell all the way. Also well done to Andy Arbuthnot of Station Bar who was close behind in 3rd in his debut season playing in the League.

In the battle for 2nd place an emphatic 11-4 win for The Gatherups at the Gers secured it for Dessie Coopers team with Bill McIlroys Thatch finishing 3rd.

With the No 1 Club going down 11-4 at Larne FC it means that they will join No 1 Blues, Feathers and Eagle Rockets in the 4 teams to fight for the Premier Cup.

The bottom 4 teams vying for the GSG Cup had already been confirmed as L.I.P.S, Larne FSC, Station Bar 'B' and Ulsterbus.

Our Easter Fun Quiz for our nominated 2010/11 Charity " FASA", raised £175.20 Thanks to everyone who attended and well done to the winning team "A Right Charlie and his Angels"

Add this to the £204 raised at the Charity Pool Night "Larne v Carrick" and it gives us a grand total of £379.20 which will be handed over to FASA at our Prizegiving night in the Pigeon Club Friday 27th May.

After a gruelling season, the final League fixture of the 2010/2011 campaign takes place this Thursday 12th May. There are still a few isues to be decided as follows -

1. Ibrox are Champions. But can they make it a whole season unbeaten. Station Bar 'B' are the only team that can shatter the dream.

2. The battle for Runners Up. A point for the Gatherups will secure it, but if they slip up at the Gers, a win for the Thatch at St Comgalls will give it to Bill McIlroys men.

3. "Player of the Year". It's down to 2 now. Ed McDowell leads Gerry McCorry by 2. Whoever wins it both players have had outstanding seasons, good luck to both.

4. The GSG bottom 4 Cup teams are now confirmed, L.I.P.S ; Larne FSC ; Station Bar 'B' and Ulsterbus will bevying to end the season with some silverware.

5. The Premier Cup for teams finishing 8th - 11th. No 1 Blues ; Eagle Rockets and Feathers are confirmed, but it's between Larne FC and No 1 Club to see who fills last spot. If Larne FC win or draw they will finish either 6th or 7th which would be very commendable after a very slow start to the campaign. If No 1 Club win the match they finish in 7th place, which would cement a good season for them also.

A big congratulations to Ibrox Pool Team who are Larne Pool League 2010/2011 Champions. They wrapped it up last night (14th March) with a 10-5 home win over the No 1 Club. In one of the toughest leagues in NI this year, Richard Todds team won the title unbeaten, having won 23 and drawn 2. It completes the double for the Rangers Club team, having won the Knockout Cup earlier in the season. Having agonislingly failed in their League campaign at the last hurdle last season, ironically also at home to Alec Irvine's No 1 Club, it looked like a case of dejavu for a while. Like last year Ibrox took a 3-0 lead and like last year the No 1 ended the 1st session only 1 behind at 2-3. But the turning point came in frame 12 when it looked certain to go to 6-6. Instead E.McDowell cut in a very fine black when he was allowed back to the table for 7-5. Needing just a point on the night, Stephen Burns was the man who sealed it in Frame 13, with a great combination shot finish.

The race is now on for 2nd place with Gatherups, Gers, Thatch and Station Bar 'A' all still hoping to grab it. Games remaining as follows

Neil McKelvey of The Gers Pool Team is the new 2011 SRM Services Larne Pool League Individual Champion. The Last 16 competitors played off to a finish in the Rangers Club on the 4 Baizecraft Competition Tables. He beat Stephen McWhirter from Ibrox Pool Team, who played some of his best pool of the season to make the Final. And McWhirter came within a whisker of winning it when leading 5-4, but McKelvey levelled then took the deciding frame with an excellent positional shot on his last colour. It is Neil's 3rd time as Champion, the other two occasions being 2007 & 2008.

Larne League holds Charity fundraising night

Larne Pool League held their annual Charity event with Carrick League in the Rangers Club on Friday 25th March. A great night of fun, banter and not forgetting the Pool, was had by all.

£204 was raised on the night and is going towards our nominated Charity for this season - FASA, a local organisation that deals with drug abuse and suicide awareness.

The match format devised by League Chairman, Bill McIlroy was innovative with 4 different sections contributing to the overall result.

Thatch defend their title

Thatch Bar are the McMichael 2011 Larne League 3 A Sides Champions. They successfully defended the crown they won last year in a terrific night of Pool drama in Larne Rangers Club on 4 Baizecraft Competition Tables..

8 teams took to the green baize, all with hopes of becoming Champions, in the first match the Ibrox 98s just failed to overcome the Gatherups 'B' Team losing 5-4. The Thatch 'A' team overcame Ulsterbus 5-2, but if the Busmen had converted some of the openings they carved out it could have been a different story. Gers hammered Feather Pluckers 5-1 and the fancied Larne FC trio strolled past Thatch 'B' by 5-2. Into the Semis now and Larne FC raced into a 4-0 lead against the Gers lads, but they struggled to get over the winning line and Gers came back to level at 4-4. But no better man than Jonny Nelson to go on in a deciding frame and he duly delivered to put the Station Road team into the final. Gatherups 'B' looked strong as they went 2-0 up but Thatch went on a winning streak of 5 frames to book their place in the final for the second year in a row. Larne FC never really got going in the final and The Thatch were 4-0 up after only 20 minutes of play. Nelson won the 5th frame to pull one back, but Bill McIlroy Sr siezed upon a missed black in frame 6, clearing the table in one visit to retain the trophy for his team.

Eligibility - Players must be registered to a team in the Larne Pool League and have played at least 5 frames in the League before the draw take.
Entry - All entries with entrance fee must be returned to your team Delegate who must return them to the Rangers Club by 21:30pm on Thursday 24th March for inclusion in the draw.

Players must be ready to play at the stated times or a frame will be deducted for every 10 minutes the player is late. A loss of match will be awarded after 30 minutes.

It's McDowell and English at the double

Another trophy heads to the Rangers Club as Ibrox duo Ed McDowell and Kenny English (pictured right) become the 2010/2011 Larne League Doubles Champions.

The Pigeon Club was the venue as the last 4 teams battled it out for a place in the Final and a chance to win the trophy.

Semi Final 1 was an all Ibrox affair. McDowell and English took on team mates and 2009 winners Robert Hawkins and Stephen McWhirter. But apart from a missed opportunity to level in Frame 2, Hawkins and McWhirter were beaten 3-0 in the end by the more consistent McDowell and English.

In Semi Final 2, reigning Champions Trevor Whiteside and Stephen Burns, also from Ibrox, never reached the heights that took them to last seasons success. A clinical display of potting from Jonny Nelson (Larne FC) and Bryan McWhirter (No 1 Club), in a 3-1 victory, seen them progress to the Final where they hoped to make it a hat trick of wins, the previous two coming in 2004 and 2007

The Final (best of 7) was a nailbiter right up to the end and the frames went as follows -

The Larne Pool League Doubles Competition starts this Thursday (17th February) with the first rounds of matches. From each of the 8 venues, will emerge 1 pairing to play in the Quarter Finals which will take place on Monday 21st February in the Pigeon Club. The Competition will be then played to a finish, also in the Pigeon Club on Monday 28th February.

There are some mouth watering ties in prospect. Last years winners Stephen Burns & Trevor Whiteside face Bill McIlroy Sr & Lee McCormick, whilst who could call the winner of the Bill McIlroy Jr/Gerry McCorry pairing against the duo of Dee Irwin/Paul Roberts. Ibrox Pool Team have lifted the first team trophy of the season. They beat Station Bar 'A' 8-5 in the Final which was held in the Pigeon Club on St. Valentines Night, 14th February. Apart from 2 superb break and dish's it was a scrappy match, with both teams making a lot of unforced errors on the big occasion of a Cup Final. Frames went as follows,

Under the Captaincy of Scott Hutchinson the boys excelled and topped their group winning all 4 matches before losing to eventual winners North Down & Ards at the Last 4 stage. With many players making their debuts in the unique atmosphere that is the "Interleague" the future looks bright for pool in Larne.

A Larne Interleague team travelled up to Ballymena United Social Club (pictured right) to take part in the Northern Ireland Pool Association annual Competition on Sunday 24th January. And they done themselves and our League proud by reaching the Semi Finals, only losing out to eventual Winners Coleraine. With Bill McIlroy Sr at the helm, the boys created a great atmosphere and support for each other during the entire day. Group wins against Town & Country and last years winners North Down & Ards secured a spot in the last 4. With several players making their debuts alongside more established players in the side the future looks bright for Larne.
Top scorers for Larne were Bill McIlroy Sr 83%, Gerry McCorry 66%, Anthony McCorry, Bill McIlroy Jr, Ellis Martin 63%, Dessie Cooper 60% and Ciaran O'Toole 50%

Well done to Larne's Aaron Wright who was Runner Up in the Northern Ireland Under 21 Individual Championship. The Gers cueist played some great pool to reach the Final including a tense 5-4 Semi Final victory, in which he took out 4 very difficult colours and a long black in the 9th and deciding frame, a clearance that World Champion JaysonShaw would have been proud off. Aaron lost 6-2 to Coleraine's Scott Clarke in the Final in a fine display of attacking pool by both players.

In the Knockout Cup Quarter Finals, the best result of the round must go to Station Bar 'A', who with an understrength side travelled to the Pigeon Club and overcame a very strong Gatherups team. Ibrox rallied from 2-3 down to take 6 in a row against the Thatch, Ed McDowell continuing his fine recent form with another hat trick. Ulsterbus earned themselves a Semi Final berth by thrashing Larne Inver Park Social 8-1. And in the remaining match Paul Gingles won the 14th frame of the evening to send Larne FC through, albeit against an understrength Gers team.

We have reached the half way stage of our 2010/2011 season. Ibrox, managed by Richard Todd lead the way with a storming 14 wins out of 14 played. Following close behind hoping for any slip ups are The Gatherups, Station Bar 'A', The Thatch and The Gers The transfer window is now open for any new signings for the second half of the season which will see the League Champions crowned, and the Knockout Cup Winners decided, along with our 3 A Sides, our Doubles and our Individuals which will be played in the Festival week with 4 Baizecraft Championship tables being brought specially into the Rangers Club. Also up for grabs are the Player of the Year, Premier Cup and the GSG Cup,

The Committee of Larne Pool League would like to thank everyone for making it a successful season so far and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. See you all again on the 6th January.
